Principal Moment

One of my favorite scenes in Miracle on 34th Street is when attorney John Payne proves that his client, Mr. Kringle, is in fact Santa Claus.  Mail carriers from the United States Postal Service march into the courthouse carrying thousands of children’s letters addressed to Santa.  By delivering these letters to Mr. Kringle, Payne argues that the Post Office-a branch of the federal government-recognizes Kris Kringle to be Santa Claus.  Santa is saved by the Post Office.

Kids’ letters to Santa are pretty darn cute.  When a child really wants something badly, he’ll write in capital letters then go crazy with exclamation marks. (“PLEEEEEEASE BRING ME A DOG!!!!!!!!!!!!”)  Once in a while a child will reprimand Santa. (“Last year I asked for an alligator and all I got was a gerbil.  I hope you’ll do better this year.”)  Rarely will a child sign his last name.  Santa knows who he is.

There are always lots of questions for the man up north: “How’s Rudolph?” “How’s Mrs. Claus?” “Do reindeer really fly?” “Was I nice or naughty?” “How do you fit down the chimney?”

I hope you get an opportunity to truly enjoy the excitement that children feel during this holiday season!

Cold Weather Guidance

With the cold weather conditions upon us I wish to review the procedures for cold weather.

  • It is recommended that students arrive at school no earlier than 8:00 for supervision purposes.
  • Children should arrive at school dressed for the weather of the day so they can safely and comfortably enjoy recesses. In winter months, children should remember to bring shoes to change into from their snow boots. All healthy children will be expected to go out for recess except in extreme weather conditions (wind chill, rain, snow, unhealthy air/inversions.)  We check air quality daily at http://air.utah.gov/currentconditions.php?id=np.
  • If your child cannot participate in recess for health reasons, please send a note to this effect. If it is to be a prolonged indoor stay (longer than 3 days) please send a note from the doctor.
  • Students will remain inside in extreme weather conditions such as: very cold temperatures (below 20 degrees) and wind chill, heavy rain and snowfall.
  • Please be considerate and safety conscious as you drop off and pick up students at school. The winter months see an increase in the number of cars. Remember to: not block the flow of traffic, not block the cross walk area, use parking stalls and not the pull through lanes if you need to enter the building.

Food Drive-Cans for Kids

Riverview Afterschool program and Riverview Student Council are pleased to announce the eighth annual Food Drive service project.   This service project will run until Wednesday, Dec. 20th, our goal is to BEAT last year’s total of 3,000 cans of food!  The food will be donated to families in our school, Nebo Pantry, and the Utah Food Coalition.

The Nebo Pantry is for homeless and transient students in our district.  The District currently has many students in this situation.

This is a great opportunity to teach our students about service and being grateful for the things we have.  All cans should be brought to your student’s classroom to be counted and recorded.

PLEASE make sure the cans have not EXPIRED.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!  LET’S ALL WORK TOGETHER FOR A GREAT CAUSE!!
