Principal Moment

Did you ever wonder where the Boy Who Cried Wolf went to school?   About ten years ago, he was in my first grade class.  He usually talked with his fingers crossed behind his back.  About once a week, he would walk up to me and point to the sky, or my shoes, or my hair and scream, “Mrs. Killian, look!”  I would look and he would shout, “You looked!”  And laugh.  It was the highlight of his day.

Some days, I would refuse to look and this would drive him crazy.

One day, he came to my desk: “Mrs. Killian, I can’t hear.”

“Go back to your desk.”  Nothing, he just stared at me.

“Mrs. Killian, really, I can’t hear.”

“Please, go back to your desk.”  Again.  Nothing.

“Mrs. Killian, I mean it.  I think there is a pink eraser stuck in my ear.”

I tugged on his left ear lobe and peered in, and sure enough, deep inside I could see a pink pencil top eraser.  He had jammed the eraser end of his pencil into his ear canal, and “pop” off came the eraser.

“Let’s call your dad.”

“Huh?”

“I SAID, LET’S CALL YOUR DAD!”

The next day, a grinning young man returned to school carrying a plastic sandwich bag.  Inside the bag was a pink eraser and a small piece of paper.   He proudly held the plastic bag for all to see.  He announced that after a visit to the Dr.’s office, his dad had taken him to a Chinese restaurant.  He took out the small piece of paper; his fortune from the restaurant.  He read it aloud to the class…”You are a very good listener.”

School Field Trip to Spanish Fork High School

Nebo schools are working to create a culture where students are exposed to the various arts.  Each year teachers receive professional development on how to integrate arts into the curriculum.  On Thursday, February 7th, Riverview will be walking to Spanish Fork High School to watch the drama department perform Robin.  This field trip will allow students an opportunity to experience the elements of drama they have been learning about this year: character, conflict, story, and script.

Please make sure your child is on time to school on the 7th.  We will be walking to the high school immediately following the morning announcements.  The play is to begin as soon as we are all seated.  The duration is 1 ½ hours.  Immediately following the play, we will walk back to the school.  Lunch will be served once we return to Riverview.

The weather is forecast to be 28 degrees.  Students will need to have a warm coat and appropriate walking shoes/boots.

Nebo Stakeholder Survey

Each parent and employee in Nebo School District should have received an email with the link to the Stakeholder Survey.  There is also a link on the Nebo District Home Page.  Students, parents and employees can go to this link to complete the survey.  I encourage you to look for the email and/or the link and take the opportunity to give your input.  https://neboschools.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6LO8U6D4PUASil7.

Kindness Week

Mrs. Roxanne Shumway, our school counselor, is helping us remember the importance of being kind.  The purpose of Kindness Week is to promote kindness within our school community.  Each day has a theme:

  • Monday – Mahalo Monday – Mahalo means “thank you”. Wear bright colors or Hawaiian shirts
  • Taco ‘bout it Tuesday – Talk with friends and classmates about how important it is to be kind to everyone.
  • We Are Kind Wednesday – Sign a poster, agreeing to be kind at school to everyone. Each student will receive a pin to wear on the learning lanyard to remind us to always be kind.
  • Thoughtful Thursday – Everyone will receive a secret mission of kindness.
  • Friendship Friday – Everyone at Riverview BELONGS at Riverview. Wear school t-shirts or school colors to show unity.

Pledge for Kindness

I pledge to be kind in every way.

I pledge to be supportive and encouraging in my words.

I pledge to be responsible and considerate in my actions.

I pledge to love myself and others.

PTA

Thank you to the PTA for hosting the White Ribbon Week!  Students focused on Brain Powers and how media and technology can be used to enhance our brain power or damage our mental capacity.

This week the PTA is hosting a Box Tops Competition.  Make sure the box tops have not expired.  The class with the most box tops will earn a pizza party!  Classes with no expired box tops will also get a prize.  Ready, Set, Clip!

February 12th is PTA Day at the Utah Capitol; 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM.

Thank you for a great Science Day!  It was an exciting day; I loved listening to the students explain their projects.  The following students are moving on to district level: Kyler Spencer, Alexia Sharp, Halle Collingridge, Josh Jorgensen, Mason Anderson, Bella Cox, Daniel Owen, Alec Bluth, Dylan Bluth, Evan Jones, Jayda Jones, Jericho Grayson, Paige Terranova, Macey Evans, Jenna Chipman, Callie McGuire, and Noelle Terranova.

Riverview Collaborating - It takes a village to raise a child.  Many people collaborating sincerely contribute to the successful educational outcomes and experiences of each learner.

Riverview’s beliefs aligned with supporting evidence:

  • Proactive and positive relationships are at the heart of effective teacher and learning. Shirley Clarke, John Hattie, Vivianne Robison, Dylan Williams
  • There is an innate sense and drive in mankind to make a contribution to other people and society as a whole. Daniel Pink
  • Much more can be achieved and potentially gained when engaged in meaningful collaboration. Michael Fullan
  • Shared values and mindsets help to build a desirable culture. Michael Fullan, Carol Dweck
  • More is gained and learning retained when involved in dialogue and discourse with others. Peter Senge

Parents should be educated in the Riverview language of learning, so that the home and school can share in the same expectations.  How can you help at home?

  1. The way we praise our children can have a profound impact on the learner powers. When we praise children for being smart, it sends a message that their accomplishments are something they were born with.  In contrast, praise kids for working hard.  It sends a message that the child’s effort is what led them to success.
  2. Tell your children that when they work hard, that’s the feeling of their neurons connecting. When children learn that their brains physically change with effort, it leads to increased motivation and achievement.
  3. Accept Mistakes as Learning Opportunities – Explain to your children that trying hard things is what helps us grow, and you can’t be perfect when you try something hard!

Together, we can help students realize that great effort leads to great progress!
