Principal Moment

This week is Riverview Teacher Appreciation Week.   I truly appreciate our teachers!

Our teachers take slivers out of fingers and bad sports out of kick ball.  They know when a child has gum in his mouth even when he is not chewing.  They have sung “Happy Birthday” 657 times.

They hand over scissors with the handles up.  They can listen to one child talk about his birthday party and another talk about her sleepover and another talk about getting stitches last night-all at the same time.

They fix staplers that won’t staple and zippers that won’t zip.  They hand out papers and pencils and stickers and envelopes for newly pulled teeth.  They know the difference between Austria and Australia.

They plan lessons while showering, driving, eating, and sleeping.  They plan lessons five minutes before the bell rings.  They know what time it is when the big hand is on the twelve and the little hand is on the nine.  They say the r in library. They do not say the w in sword.

They put on Band-Aids and winter coats and puppet shows and Hoe Downs.  They know students will not understand the difference between your and you’re.

They correct pencil grips and spelling mistakes and bad manners.  They push in chairs all the way and push sleeves up while children are painting. They can touch the paper cutter.

They say, “Use two hands!” when kiddos carry their lunch trays.  They say, “Accidents happen,” after kiddos did not use two hands.

They know that colonel is a really hard word to read, and so is doubt and so is gauge.  They know that kids will read started, when it says stared.  They have spelled because and beautiful and friend six million times.

They know when a child does not understand.  They know when a child is telling the truth.  They know when a child has been up too late.  They know when a child needs help finding a friend.

They are our teachers!  Thank you, Riverview Teachers!!

PTA

On behalf of all Riverview teachers, I would like to thank the PTA for providing a wonderful SEP dinner!  In honor of pi day, teachers were served a delicious pot pie with a huge assortment of pie for dessert!  We felt very loved!

Thank you to all who participated in the Box Tops Competition.  The top class was Mrs. Jensen’s first grade.  Keep clipping the Box Tops to get ready for next year!  Did you know there is another EASY way to earn money for Riverview? Just download the Box Top app and scan your receipts when you buy Box Tops products.

PTA is excited about our BOGO Book Fair coming up in April; April 15-19 on the stage before school, during lunch, and after school.  Family night event will be on Thursday, April 18th 6:00-8:00 p.m.  Please note that Scholastic is now charging sales tax on all purchases.  Please discuss this with your children so they understand how that works and will have enough money with them when they make a purchase.  We understand this will be a big adjustment to how Book Fairs have been done in the past and appreciate your help and patience with us while we all get used to the sales tax.

2019 - 2020 Riverview Student Placement Procedures

Classroom placement at Riverview is a process that takes teachers and administration many hours of careful thought and consideration.  We look at gender, learning abilities, peer friendships, combinations (both positive and non-constructive), class size, social and academic strengths and challenges, diversity, as well as leadership and role models to form equitable classroom communities that ensure both social and academic development for all children.

We take our classroom placement decisions very seriously and do our best to create classroom communities that promote growth and development for each student.  Our goal is to create classes that address both the fit between the student and teacher and to create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning for all students. Once the classroom communities have been formed the movement of children from parent requests alters the integrity of the groups and causes a chain reaction within the classroom balance.

We will not be sending a form to accept requests as in previous years.  Last year we had over 600 requests, too many requests to have balanced classrooms.  We respect tremendously that you know your student in ways we could not possibly know them.  We likewise ask that you trust that your child’s teacher has knowledge about your child’s academic, social, emotional, and behavior needs that may vary from what you see in the home setting.  Thank you for your cooperation with this.
