Principal Moment

Yesterday I visited with an old friend who once taught first grade in the classroom right next to mine.  Our students shared a mudroom and we shared lesson plans.  We reminisced about how much has changed.

We talked about our first teaching job and our first interview.  Here’s what I probably said then and what I’d say now if in the same interview:

Question 1: If I walked into your classroom, what would I see?

Answer at first interview: You would see children working collaboratively in peace and harmony, praising each other, and sharing their supplies happily with one another.  You would see children thinking critically, helping their classmates, and encouraging one another.

Answer today: You’d see Brian hiding the soccer ball between his feet, Peter connecting markers together to make one really long marker, and me sneaking candy from my candy stash.

Question 2: What are your strengths?

Answer at first interview: I’m energetic and enthusiastic and extremely hardworking.

Answer today: I can pull off a Band-Aid so it won’t hurt.

Question 3: How would you meet the individual differences of your students?

Answer at first interview:  I believe in giving students a variety of choices.  For example, when the children are practicing their spelling, the more visual child could draw pictures of her spelling words with different colored pens.  The more kinesthetic child could write his words in sand or shaving cream.

Answer today: I believe in giving students a variety of choices.  For example, you can do your spelling now or you can do it at lunch.

Question 4: What is a teacher’s most important tool?

Answer at first interview: Love.

Answer today: Candy.

Question 5: Why should we hire you?

Answer at first interview: I like kids.

Answer today: I like kids.

You know what they say…the more things change, the more they stay the same!

Dress for the Weather

Cool weather is upon us.  Please send your child to school with a jacket for recess.  In order to keep the lost-n-found collection from growing, please label jackets with your child’s name.

Riverview Cold Weather Procedures

Riverview checks http://air.utah.gov/currentconditions.php?id=np each morning.  Please adhere to the following so that we are all on the same page.

1)      If students arrive before 8:10, students are to sit on the concrete benches in the front foyer unless they are in morning homework help club.  Students in homework club have to have a registration form completed by parent.  The club is free to all but the form needs to be signed.

2)      Homework club is from 8:00-8:40.

3)      At 8:10, release students from the front foyer benches…those who are eating breakfast may go to the lunch room, everyone else goes outside if the temp is 20 or above. All healthy children will be expected to go out for recess except in extreme weather conditions (wind chill, rain, snow, unhealthy air inversions). We check air quality daily.

4)      If a child cannot participate in recess for health reasons, please have parents send a note.  If it is a prolonged indoor stay (longer than 3 days) please send a note from the doctor.

5)      When the temperature is below 20 degrees, students should be inside with the following options:

1.       In morning,

a.    Kinder-2nd grades go to the Little Theater with one of the morning playground duty teachers supervising the little ones.

b.    3rd- 6th grades go to the gym with one of the morning playground duty teacher supervising the big ones.

2.       During lunch students will go directly to their classrooms.

6)      Library…students may go in and exchange a book and then are to go outside.

7)      In the event of a major weather event (severe storm, power outage…) the District’s Blackboard Communication system will be used to notify parents.
