WEEK ELEVEN - OCTOBER 30TH - NOVEMBER 3RD

Principal Moment

There are some things that happen at school that are guaranteed to bring any lesson to a grinding halt and there is nothing that even the most highly effective teacher can do to refocus students.

Spiders

When a student screams, “Spider!” Do not try to teach. Go directly to cup.  Watch children jump out of seats and run to spider.  Watch children jump backward when they see spider.  Hear them scream loudly. Turn cup upside down.  Capture spider.  Put spider outside.  Tell children to sit down. Tell children to sit down again.  Then tell children to sit down and stay down.  Listen to spider stories for twenty minutes.

Bees

When a bee flies in through the window, listen to children scream, “Bee!” over and over.  Watch bee fly around room.  Watch children fly around room also.  Watch boy start to swat bee.  Scream, “Stop that!”  Now, watch bee fly around room faster.  Do not get cup.  Bees do not like cups.  Pick up folder.  Try to shoo bee out of window with folder.  Listen to children laugh at you as you try to shoo bee out the window.  When bee is finally outside, listen to bee sting stories for twenty minutes.

Lightning

When you see lightning, children will begin to chatter.  Do not say, “Quiet.”  It does not work.  All children talk when they see lightning.  You will soon hear thunder.  Do not try to squeeze math problems in between lightning and thunder crashes.  It does not work either.

Snow

When the first snow falls, listen to children scream, “Look!  Snow!”  Children will ask to go outside.  Say no.  Children will repeat question.  Repeat answer.  Warning: Do not walk near your coat or door at this time.  If you do, children will think you are going outside and start jumping up and down and wagging their tails.

Halloween

If Halloween falls on a school day, stop teaching immediately.  Find a costume.  Do not come dressed as a teacher.  Children will ask what you are dressed as.  When you say, “A teacher and we are going to learn so many things today!” students will laugh and say, “Good costume!”  Watch children jump out of seats and run and jump and hear them scream loudly and wag their tails.  Do not say, “Quiet.”  It does not work.  All children talk on Halloween.  Do not try to squeeze math problems or reading in on Halloween.  It does not work either.  Happy Halloween!!

Halloween

On Halloween, we will begin our morning with a Halloween parade.  Into the school on Halloween morning will walk Superman, a clown, an angel, some devils, the Disney princesses will be present, maybe an astronaut, a pack of Ninjas, Darth Vader, and possibly some pirates.

We will be parading outside this year.  We invite you to drop your children off, find a parking stall, pull out the lawn chairs, choose a good seat on the parade route and stay for the “Monster March.”  Students will assemble in their classroom and after the morning bell and announcements, we will begin our parade.  The ghouls and goblins will exit from the school, parade around the sports park, re-enter and parade through the halls; dropping each class off at their classroom door.

Afternoon Kindergarten will begin their parade at 12:30 p.m. They will parade around the Kindergarten Playground.

Come watch the fun!

Check out spoooooky Riverview RAM scarecrow this Halloween season.  Our entry in the Spanish Fork City Scarecrow Contest is directly in front of Central Bank on Main Street.  Don’t forget to vote for our scarecrow.  The winner gets $100 and bragging rights!

End of the Term Report Cards

Friday, October 27th was the end of the first term.  Please be looking for a copy of your child’s report card for the first term.

It is our goal for parents to be well informed and engaged on how your child is achieving and progressing.  All teachers are implementing a SIS Standards Based report card.  A Standards Based report card lists the most important skills students should learn in each subject at each grade level.  Instead of letter grades, students receive marks that show how well they have mastered skills. This type of reporting should provide parents more knowledge on which skills and knowledge your child has acquired.

Nebo Boys/Girls After-School Clubs – NO CLUBS ON HALLOWEEN!

Clubs are starting this week.  All students will meet in the lunch room at 3:00 p.m. for a snack and an activity.  Students will then separate into the various clubs.  All students are excused at 4:30 p.m.  Parents, plan to pick up children at the flag pole or have the students walk home.  Please have then conversation with your children about whether they walk or wait to be picked up.

We do have 4 additional clubs that have been made available this session.  They are

  • Spa and Healthy Lifestyles Club; 3rd – 6th grades
  • Unity Game Design; 3rd – 6th grades
  • Santa’s Workshop; K-3rd
  • Afterschool Homework Club; All grades

Book Fair This Week!

October 30th – November 2nd

Find books for all ages and interests! Don’t know what to buy? Watch for teacher picks and teacher requests.

Halloween Book Haunt at the Book Fair-Tuesday, October 31st; Immediately following the Halloween parade.  Parents, this is a chance for you to shop for Christmas presents without your kids.

Family Night at the Book Fair-Thursday, November 2nd; 5:30-7:30 p.m.  Don’t miss this fun event!  There will be piles of prizes and games galore.  You’ll think you’re on a real dude ranch!

Each book fair we raise money for ‘All for Books.’  This is a program in which 100% of the proceeds go to buying books for Riverview.  Show you pride (Utes or Cougars) by donating to this great cause.

In order to make this a successful book fair, the PTA MUST have many volunteers.  You DO NOT have to be a member of the PTA to volunteer.  PLEASE follow this link to sign-up and support our wonderful Riverview Rams. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ihhcM1G20JFsSaj1anqNR05dwHlQrAvfbZkjH7wAVig/edit#gid=0.

Riverview Elementary PTA presents the “Reflections” contest.  Express yourself through art; Literature, Visual Arts, Dance, 3-D Art, and Photography.   The 2017-2018 Theme:  “Within Reach.”  Have students pick up an entry form from their teacher or at the office.  Deadline: Friday, November 3rd.

Veteran’s Pictures

If you have a family member who has served in the military, please be willing to share with us a copy of his/her photo.  Mrs. RaeAnn Nelson will be posting the pictures in the hall in honor of all those who are serving our country.

Website-Updated

The Riverview website http://riverview.nebo.edu/. has been updated in order to hopefully make it easier to access school information.

Please click on the ‘Parents’ link to find all information regarding after-school clubs, busing information, map for dropping off/picking up, our positive behavior intervention and support system (PBIS), PTA information, contact information when bullying is occurring (SafeUT), school community council (SCC), and the school handbook.  The main column will allow you to read all newsletters sent home by me this year.

The ‘Students’ link will allow students connect to online homework resources and learning sites.

The ‘Learning to Learn’ link will allow you to see our philosophy of learning.  Riverview is committed to making learning visible.  We are purposefully teaching learners to get out of ‘I am stuck in my learning’ situations.  Being stuck is celebrated as an opportunity to grow and stretch our brains; thereby building our learning capacity. We have ‘Learner Powers’ that are integrated into all lessons.  The Learner Powers are an important part of enabling students to advance in their own learning.  By making learning visible and empowering our students, children are building their confidence and are ‘Making a Mark, Making it Matter’

Weather

Cool weather is upon us.  Please send your child to school with a jacket for recess.  In order to keep the lost-n-found collection from growing, please label jackets with your child’s name.
