Principal Moment

I remember back in my student teacher days I told my cooperating teacher I wasn’t cut out for teaching.  “Colton is constantly out of his seat, Cameron tried to turn me off with the remote, Nicole is crying again, Nathan drew red dots all over himself and said he has chicken pox, and right in the middle of my math lesson, you know what Spencer asked me?”

“What?” She asked.

“Do you like buhsgetti?”

My cooperating teacher just smiled and said: “Sounds normal. Listen, teaching is ninety percent natural and ten percent learned.  You have the ninety.  Now you just need a few tools.  The problem is you don’t have the looks down yet.  Every teacher has a collection of looks.  You have to, or you won’t survive.”

“There are five different teacher looks.  The first is called the Raised Eyebrow.  Simply raise both eyebrows as high as you can.  Do not speak.  Keep your head perfectly still.  Stare for five to ten seconds.  The Raised Eyebrow is used when Sam is spinning his fidget spinner or Jordan is playing with a rubber band.”

“The second is called the Chin Up. Raise your chin slowly.  While raising your chin, raise your eyebrows at the same time. The Chin Up is used when Ronny stabs Brian with a paper clip on the way to the pencil sharpener, or Timmy tells Sarah to put her finger in the stapler.”

“The third is called the Chin Down; this isn’t to be confused with the Chin Up.  The Chin Down is for not doing your homework, or for emptying the pencil sharpener on the counter.  When giving the Chin Down, tilt your head down till it touches your chest.  Your lips will automatically pucker up a bit as you lower your chin. Raise your eyebrows and tilt your chin slightly to the left. For greatest effect, stare over the rim of your glasses.”

“The fourth is the Pursed Lips.  Simply pucker your lips together tightly while staring at the students.  Furl your eyebrows as hard as you can, and breathe out deeply so that the student hears you.  Do not let the air out right away, hold your breath for two to three seconds.  Use the Pursed Lips when Scott uses the classroom windows as the ball wall.”

“The fifth is the Jaw Drop.  This one’s easy.  Just open your mouth,  look horrified, and freeze for three to five seconds.”

The next morning at 9:15, Colton pulled out a rubber band.  My cooperating teacher looked over at me.  I gave her a wink and a thumbs-up.  I walked right over to Colton and raised my eyebrows.  I am sure I looked like I had just had a bad face-lift.

Colton said, “I did it.”

I said, “What?”

“My homework,” he said.

“I don’t want your homework.”

“Then why are you looking at me like that?” Colton asked.

“I want you to put the rubber band away,” I said.

He put it away.

I love my job!

Food Drive-Cans for Kids

Riverview Afterschool and Riverview Student Council are pleased to announce the 8th annual Food Drive and Giving Tree service project.  This service project will be Nov. 27th-Dec 20th, our goal is to BEAT the last year’s total of 3000 cans of food!  The food will be donated to families in our school, Nebo Pantry, and the Utah Food Coalition.

The Nebo Pantry is for homeless and transient students in our district.  The District currently has over 1,500 students in this situation.  The Nebo Pantry is in extreme need of the following items:

  • NEW boys & girls underwear kids size 6,7,8,9,10,12,14
  • NEW boys & girls socks sizes 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14
  • NEW or gently used boys and girls coats sizes 6, 8, 10, 12, 14
  • Easy to prepare food items: chicken, tuna, canned fruit, fruit snacks, spaghetti Os, Easy Mac, ramen noodles, granola bars, cereal, and juice boxes
  • Diapers and wipes, kid’s gloves, and hats.

If any student donates socks, underwear, gloves or coats they will get 5 bonus points for the food drive. Each can of food will be worth 1 point, teachers will keep track of class points.

There will be a contest between the classes, the class per grade level that collects the most cans and bonus points will receive a root beer float party. This is a great opportunity to teach our students about larger service and being grateful for the things we have. Students could do jobs around the house to earn their canned food. All cans should be brought to the student’s classroom to be counted and recorded.

PLEASE make sure the cans are not EXPIRED.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!!!!!!!!  LETS ALL WORK TOGETHER FOR A GREAT CAUSE.
