Principal Moment

“Teacher says, ‘Every time a bell rings, and angel gets his wings,’” a famous by in “It’s A Wonderful Life” reminds me daily as our school bell rings at 8:40 a.m. that an incredible team of 81 angels don on their wings and begin teaching an eager community of students.

As I’m sure our Riverview families are aware, this school year teachers have been going above and beyond to engage their students.  I’ve seen teachers adapt to every obstacle thrown their way in order to keep learning moving forward.  I am so grateful and proud of our teachers who, with nary a complaint, have stepped up to the challenge of giving as solid an education as possible to each student in their charge.

I wish you all a very merry Holiday Season.  Please know how appreciative of you I am for your support to Riverview.  We are so fortunate to be able to serve your children.  We love them so!

Christmas Kick Off Week

It’s that magical time of year.  December is one of the most fun times to work in an elementary school.  We have some fun theme days next week to start of the Christmas season:

  • 14th – Candy Cane Day – Wear Red and White
  • 15th – Holiday Cheer from Head to Toe – Wear holiday hats, scarves and socks
  • 16th – Winter is Coming – Wear sweaters and vests
  • 17th – Fleece Navidad – Wear your favorite flannel or fleece
  • 18th – Comfy and Cozy are We – Wear PJ’s or cozy clothes

Food Drive Thank you

With your help, we’ve gathered loads of non-perishable food and clothing to donate to the children in our community.

I thought I’d share a sweet act of compassion.  We have a family who has sold board games.  The money from the sale of the board games has been used to purchase 79 coats and 70 essential clothing such as: hats, gloves, underwear and socks.  These items will be donated to children at Riverview, Park and the Nebo Pantry.

Here’s to you!  From all of us at Riverview, thank you.

Change Between Remote and At-School Learning

As we approach the end of second term (January 14), parents wanting to change their child’s learning option for third term from Remote Learning to At-School Learning, or vice versa, can do so by submitting their decision in THIS SURVEY between December 10 and January 5.

If parents do not wish to change their student’s learning option at this time, they should not submit the survey.

Once third term begins on January 19, parents will need to stay with their decision until the term ends on March 25. At that time, parents will have another opportunity to make a change. Please contact your school if you have any questions.

Learner Powers/Animal Characters

This month we are learning to Think like Ellie Elephant.  Ellie is a cute little elephant.  She was born with big ears and a big brain.   When she goes to school, she uses her ears to listen carefully because she knows that it helps her think.  Ellie knows that once she learns something, she will never forget.  She also knows that thinking and learning is going to help her do hard things; uproot trees, carry heavy bundles on her back, and stop charging lions.  She goes to school, uses her big ears and big brain to learn everything her teacher prepares.  At the end of the day, her mother greets her with a thunderous trumpet and gentle nudge and tells her how proud she is that she is learning to think.  Don’t be afraid to think like Ellie Elephant.

When you think like Ellie Elephant, you…

  • Manage distractions
  • Get lost in the task
  • Break things down
  • Plan and think it through
  • Draw diagrams, write down thoughts or things that help you think

Cold Weather Guidance

With the cold weather conditions upon us, I wish to review the procedures for cold weather.

  • It is recommended that students arrive at school no earlier than 8:00 for supervision purposes.
  • Children should arrive at school dressed for the weather of the day so they can safely and comfortably enjoy recesses. In winter months, children should remember to bring shoes to change into from their snow boots. All healthy children will be expected to go out for recess except in extreme weather conditions (wind chill, rain, snow, unhealthy air/inversions.)  We check air quality daily at http://air.utah.gov/currentconditions.php?id=np.
  • If your child cannot participate in recess for health reasons, please send a note to this effect. If it is to be a prolonged indoor stay (longer than 3 days) please send a note from the doctor.
  • Students will remain inside in extreme weather conditions such as: very cold temperatures (below 20 degrees) and wind chill, heavy rain and snowfall.
  • Please be considerate and safety conscious as you drop off and pick up students at school. The winter months see an increase in the number of cars. Remember to: not block the flow of traffic, not block the cross-walk area, use parking stalls and not the pull through lanes if you need to enter the building.
